They predicted the fossil might be found in rocks of a certain time and a certain place (or ancient environmental setting). That place was on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada in late Devonian period rocks where the team recovered the new species Tiktaalik roseae, fitting the bill .  :) Also, there is an excellent book I have on my website, page 2 at the bottom maybe, by Robert Sloan. The geology of Scotland is unusually varied for a country of its size, with a large number of differing geological features. There are three main geographical sub-divisions: the Highlands and Islands is a diverse area which lies to the north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault; the Central Lowlands is a rift valley mainly comprising Palaeozoic formations; and the Southern Uplands, which.

Mass marine life extinctions that occurred during in the late Ordovician ( ± million years ago) claimed some 60% of genera, thereby creating niches for benthic (bottom-dwelling) and planktonic (floating, swimming) organisms.

An exquisite fossil specimen of an Eusthenopteron Fordi from the upper Devonian (Frasnian), Eescuminac Formation, Miguasha Park, Bay of Heat, Gaspé, Quebec, Canadian Museum of Natural History, Miguasha Collection.

If you look closely at this specimen, you can see the remarkable 3-D and soft-bodied preservation. This fish specimen reminds me of the ray-finned fossil fish you see in. Finally, Shubin finds a fish fossil fragment with a jaw that suggests the fish had a flat head.

Then another team member, Steve Gatesy, finds a full fish skeleton with the same flat jaw. Over the next two months, fossil preparators meticulously expose this fossil from the rock, discovering that it is an intermediate between fish and land animals.

The Devonian ancestors of fishes living today belonged to two main nonarmored groups. The cartilaginous fish, so-called because cartilage formed their skeletons, later gave rise to sharks and rays. The occurrence of Holoptychius from southern New Brunswick, Canada, adds a new locality to eastern North America and suggests the assignment of a Late Devonian age for the Kennebecasis Formation.

The distinctive scale of this large lobe-fin fish has recently been found at Red Hill. Evidently rare at the site, Holoptychius fossils are common in Late Devonian rock elsewhere in Pennsylvania, and, along with the antiarch placoderm Bothriolepis, are characteristic of fossiliferous localities belonging to the Sherman's Creek Member of the Catskill Formation.
